One day letters started popping up in squares around Metz, including an A of metal in the small Place St-Martin near our apartment, a ceramic N next to the Place de la Republic, and a wooden S in the Place St-Louis. It turns out these are the products of and a promotion for the association of artisans--metalworkers, ceramics workers, woodworkers, et al. Each sculpture is one of the letters in "Artisanat," and each has a plaque explaining who designed and built the letter plus directions to the next letter.
The sculpture series, actually a contest, organized by Metz's association of crafts and artisans, runs from March 13 to 21, as part of the 9th annual national week of artisanship.
